“Hey how’s it going, my new record’s out…”
with those words, repeated and misspoken for over two minutes, singer songwriter Billy Harvey made his way into approximately 1,000,000 computer screens in november of 2004.
perhaps more impossible to fathom is that it still exists to this day, nearly 15 years later, in its original form.
in 2018 it was offered the Guiness Records award for “longest site to stay put” but did you know there are a number of fees and costs to be included in the print edition? it’s a scam like the rock and roll hall of fame.
I created Billy’s house using some photos Billy gave to me on CD-ROM discs. printed it all out, built it with regular scotch tape and took some photos with an old digital camera that at the time was new.
I don’t know, I just made it. Billy would check in from time to time but not too much. he was a rock guitarist in Bob Schneider’s popular Lonelyland band, I was a flash designer working out of a spare bedroom.
phone numbers scattered around the site allow you to call over a variety of guests, who make comments in the different rooms of Billy’s house.
Darin Murphy does the voices for all four Beatles at an incredible level.
“I think the toilet is the only place where I could ever go to have any peace and quiet at all.”
there are plenty of people to call, videos to watch and of course Billy will sing you a song, if you want.
Billy’s site was the core of an unheard of threepeat in the music category at SXSW interactive (Bob Schneider* / Billy Harvey** / Eminem*) a streak which included also, unbelievably, two best speech wins for myself, a person who can barely stand to look anybody in the face when I talk to them.
I was working more and more with Martin, Billy Harvey was my final solo shot before the golden era of WEFAIL would take me and Martin through the next several years.
I remember showing it to Martin after it was done, I hadn’t shown him a single thing while making it lol, a vulgar display of power.
looking back I honestly don’t remember much of it.
I vaguely recall having Billy’s whole house on a table and waiting for the sun to drop low enough for better light.
people ask why you did this or why you did that, I don’t think people who ask questions like that have ever made anything before.
